Why do I have to have all them at once? There's a lot that can't be said yet. So I have to be rather cryptic. Family, Health, Love, Money. I'm fairly glad there aren't really any other TYPES of challenges, because my hands are rather full at the moment. You get a moment's reprieve and then more gets loaded on. Totally freaked me out. I've never been called back before. Every year for my annual, I ask the doctor to test EVERYTHING; I figure, I'm getting blood sucked out of me anyway, might as well get as many answers as possible. Which meant, that I could be getting called back for anything from High Cholesterol to HIV.
So my appointment was yesterday, and all day it was all I could think about. I almost forgot that I had dinner plans! Braced for the worst, I went in for my appointment. My sister was nice enough to keep me company while I was in the waiting room, if only via my BB MSN. =)~

I was pretty sure that I was being called back for high cholesterol because I've had highish cholesterol for several years now, which....while is a bummer, would have been totally manageable. Turns out tho, that my cholesterol was fine. As a matter of fact, it went down! So the reason I was called in was an abnormal spike in Creatinine Levels in my blood. My Creatinine levels have always been fairly stable, but yesterday's level was almost double what my usual number is. Doc said he's pretty sure that it's a lab mistake, but needed me to squeeze out more of the red stuff for them to re-test.

I've been granted a moment's reprieve I suppose.... But what if that number is true?! *gulp*.

~Cheers.

Topic of the Day: Winterlude....

Went with a couple of friends to Ottawa this weekend for Winterlude. I'll be posting pictures soon on Flickr. So stay tuned.
We left Friday night after work, arriving in Ottawa around 2230h. The first thing we did when we go there?! Late night run for POUTINE! Mmmmm.....Brilliant way to clog the arteries just before bedtime.

In the morning, we got up, and started the Winterlude festivities. Going down, arms linked, on ice slides. The first slide, we barely made it down halfway because of our "adult clothes". But since I was wearing a ski jacket, the next ice slide, the second we hit the ice, i laid on my back and let my jacket take us all the way down. That was fun.
Then it was off to the Canal. Since Ky is an Ottawa native, he knew the best places to park. We found a secret spot JUST off of the canal. We put on our skates and off we went, skating down 8km of ice (16km) both ways. The weather was perfect. Not too cold (-5C) and not too warm. The ice got a little soft around 1430h, but other than that....just perfect.
We had Beavertails on the Rideau. They gave us the "special" - OBAMA TAIL - Beaver tail topped with whipped cream, chocolate, and maple syrup (I think). Whatever. It was yum. haha.

At night, we went to this little Regional French restaurant in the middle of the forest in Quebec. L'Oree du Bois. I say regional because it really isn't traditional French. It's like Quebec French. Canadian French. Had a Game Consomme and a Lapin in blueberry sauce. Quite yum.

We also went to this Organic coffee place where they served coffees in Bodoms.

Topic of the Day: Go Bold...

It's been a little while, but life's been rather busy, and I've been rather lazy. But towards the end of 2008, I finally gave in and got myself a Blackberry Bold. While I hate the fact that I have one, I wonder how the heck I was ever able to survive without one before. I'm totally a crackberry addict. Not only was I able to upload photos to Facebook WHILE I was on a mountain skiing, I'm also able to check to make sure my customers were taken care of while I was in Halifax doing a Trade Show.

Of course...the social aspects of having a crackberry is great too. Sending Instant Messages to friends, checking into blogs and tweets, and even facebook updates where ever you go so you don't have to be glued to a laptop. Very liberating. Well...not so much. I've just transferred the chain around my ankle to another ball.

Other than that...nothing new to report. blah.

~Cheers.

Topic of the Day: Taiwanfest 2008 (Part III)

So photos are starting to trickle in from the evening, here's more:
http://www.panggallery.com/photo/David/content/index.html
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2423386&id=28129035

Enjoy!

~Cheers

Topic of the Day: Taiwanfest 2008 (Part II)

So today was the big day (click here for photos). The show didn't start until 2030h, but by 1830h, my hands were starting to tremble. Parked my car at E&V's place, and the three of us walked over. Saw some street performers and we joked that that the side of the boardwalk would be our stage.

We got to the stage and I checked in with the rest of the members of Casa Futuro. I started to forget the lyrics. All of a sudden, I forgot what the song sounded like. I was weak in the knees. My throat was dry. My hands were shaking. I felt good. This is what ALWAYS happpens before I get on stage. It's been over 10 years since I've had to perform, but it was good to know that nothing had changed.

As I stepped on stage, I could feel the heat of the lights; beads of sweat starting to trace my forehead. The song started and everything else went quiet. I don't know if it was because of the lights, but I didn't see anyone. I sang my song, introduced the next vocalist, and left the stage. My knees melted. Almost. I could feel my heart pounding in my ears. I relaxed. Relived that it was over.

Until they told us that it wasn't. Our set wasn't long enough and we needed to extend. Next thing I know, we're all back on stage belting and adlibbing cos we had nothing else prepared. After another song or so, they finally felt sorry for us and let us get off the stage.

All in all? It was fun to be on stage again. Maybe I'll do it again.......in another decade or so. It wasn't any of our best performances. But we seemed to be able to entertain.

Topic of the Day: Taiwanfest 2008 (Part I)

A little over a month ago, a couple of friends asked me to record a song for them. A couple of 80s techno junkies that writes songs on the side. I figured it would be fun and agreed, thinking that...well, if I'm using a pseudonym, no one will know who sang this song. All I would have to do is crawl into a little corner of Attic-Electric Studios and belt out a song for them. So I agreed, and started practising a song called 冷火 (Cold Fire).... They translated it to Frozen Fire tho. *shrug*

Anyway... 3 weeks ago, the following dialogue took place:
Ray: You ready?
Me: I suppose......................
Ray: What do you mean you suppose? You cannot 'suppose'
Me: I'm sure I'll be fine... If not, we'll just record again.
Ray: Record? That's LATER! You're going on stage in 3 weeks!
Me: WHA-------------?!?!?!??!?!?!

He filled me in on details. His group, Casa Futuro, was going to be performing on stage at Taiwanfest on August 23rd, 2008. Tonight. To showcase some of the songs that they'd written. Unbeknownst to me, but beknownst to them, I was in the lineup. So tonight, without the darkness of a Karaoke room to hide me, without the din of drunk people to drown me out, I will... for the first time, be singing LIVE. On Stage. In a public theatre. Where people can see me.

Last night, we were again (click here for photos), at Attic-Electric Studios rehearsing. I THINK, that if I'm able to hear myself, I should be ok. I hope. I pray. SHOULD. We'll see. 3 hours until showtime. I'm not even going to go on about work. But outside of work, I've broken up with my girlfriend, my buddy passed away, and now my grandfather. It's not that we were ever close, but it's still a death in the family nevertheless. My best friend's getting married later this month, and I can't go; after we've promised each other since the early years of high school that we would definitely attend each other's weddings.

~Cheers.

Viewing...

Went to pay my last respects to a good friend of mine last night. I was rather surprised how quickly everything transpired. He got into a motorcycle accident Saturday night around 1am (So really, Sunday Morning). I received word of his passing Sunday evening around dinner time. His family had arranged for a prayer session for Monday afternoon and a small ceremony for a viewing the same evening. His body is being flown back to his homeland as I write this blog entry.

I went to the viewing with a couple of friends. The event was sombre. A lot of tears. I felt bad that I had none. It's so unfortunate to see such a fine young man meet his end so early. I'm rambling a little today. Really, I don't know what to say. But I did feel that this was an important moment, and since this is my blog about my life's events, this should be included.

Well, until I think of more to write.....

~Cheers.

Topic of the Day: 多倫多華語電台

A few weeks ago, I decided to come out of my shell and post some of the songs I've put together over the years onto my xanga site. Really, none of it is really that great, they're not the work of a professional or anything, but they're mine. And I'm glad to share them with anyone who wishes. One of my friends happened to listen in and I guess she kind of liked them. What I'd completely forgotten, is that she's a DJ on a little known radio station called Toronto Chinese Radio (多倫多華語電台). She invited me on to join her and her co-host on their Saturday afternoon programme. I have to say, if it were any other radio station, I would have turned down the invitation. No offense to the station, I know they work hard on a VERY limited budget, but no one I know listens to the station. If it were a station that my peers listen to on a regular basis, I would DEFINITELY have been too insecure.

So, yesterday, I braved the snowstorm and headed up to the radio station. Because of the snowstorm, there weren't very many people around. They asked me to get there around 1530h because we would begin at 1545h. I thought that we were going to be doinga 'pre-recording', you know, so I could prepare, or have multiple takes or whatnot. To my surprise, we were going on air LIVE. EEEEEEEEEEP!!!! Again, I told myself not to worry because no one I know listens to the station. HAHAHA. Who cares if people I have never met and never heard of and who have absolutely no idea who I am hear me?
So at 1545h on Saturday March 9th, 2008, I went live; on the air, for thefirst time in my life. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, and yet I was asked the one question I knew was going to be asked and was desperately hoping that I wouldn't be asked. "What was your inspiration for writing this song?" I hate those questions (granted, I've never really answered it before), but even thinking about answering the, I feel like such a cheeseball.
Anyway, they played 3 of my songs and asked me embarassing questions and called it a day. Thank goodness no one I know listens to this station. But hey, at least I can say I've done it. Also, one of my goals in life was to have a song of mine get radio play, and now I can scratch that one off my list. =)~

One thing I've found out tho (I'm listening to the clip right now for the first time), is that my Chinese definitely has a funny accent! PUWHHAHAHHAHA

Anyway, for those of you who understand and can read Chinese, and REALLY want to hear it, you can find the clip on their site with a little digging.

~Cheers.

Topic of the Day: Another Chapter.

It's 2008. It's the year of the Rat. And a whole lot has happened in my life since the Apple fell last in Times Square. But I have difficulty putting them into words. Much of what has happened is inconsequential. I should however, note one thing. I'm really not prepared to go into too much detail right now for various reasons, but I'm single again. While I'm not in pieces or anything, I am feeling some withdrawal.

2008's proved thus far to be a crazy year. Doesn't seem like it's going to let up in the next few months either. Which also probably means that I won't be posting too much. Here or on my photoblog. Which reminds me, I still have some photos I need to upload. I've been here a couple of times and have found that their metro system is actually quite good. It's not very expensive, and they use transponder cards(*nudge nudge* TTC!). But for the first time, I decided today that I was going to save some money and took the bus to get to Staples.
I swear to you; with no offense to anyone, but I have never been surrounded by so many black people! The bus was full of people. Standing room only. And with the exception of myself and 2 other people, everyone was black. The two other people that weren't black? Hispanic. All the best to you and yours in 2008!

Looks like this Chinese Fat Bastard is starting to shed some of that swell. Oh, it's still swollen, and it still hurts, but it's starting to feel a bit better. I think I might even attempt some mushy solid food today. It felt really good to be outside yesterday, breathing in the brisk winter air. Feeling that fresh air run thru my system. It really felt great.

Too bad it's not all good news. Although the MOUND has gone down, in its stead is a big green bruise. I guess my friend Steph called it. I'm turning green. What a way to ring in the new year. Green. And I'm breaking out too. Since it hurts to wash my face, i've just been sort of splashing water. I feel like 中園一點紅 (i know it's the wrong word, it's the closest I could get with 'google translate'). HAHAHA.

So, photo update on this green chipmunk:
Out on New Year's Eve:

Ringing in 2008 as 中園一點紅:

Extraction Saga: Part III - New Year's Eve

5 days and 7 pounds lighter, I still look like Fat Bastard's Asian Brother from Another Mother. I haven't felt solid food in my mouth since Boxing Day the aromas from the kitchen are making me salivate and my stomach protest. I have however, decided to stop taking the Tylenol 3s. They keep making me loopy and it really wasn't taking the pain so much away.

I suppose however, that I have been lucky. My mother's been making me very light oatmeal and Angel's made me a very weak 蘿蔔糕. Neither however has much flavour. So Angel took it upon herself to puree up some beef stew for me. A concoction of beef, potatoes, carrots, celery, onions pureed into a baby food like paste for me. So while I haven't had anything solid, at least I think I'm safe in terms of nourishment.Unfortunately, eating tires me out. Since I can't open my mouth around the spoon, I'm pretty much sucking the mush into my mouth. Opening my mouth and trying to slurp is apparently, pretty tiring. So I haven't been eating very much.

Today's New Year's Eve. Everyone's going out to party. I've actually been invited to four or five different parties this year. Unfortunately, I won't be going to any of them. My Fat Bastardesque face and pain aside, I simply don't have the energy for it. Angel and I will be going to watch National Treasure and then just kick it at home. Oh. One more thing. The swelling SEEMS to have gone down a touch today.

I promised y'all photos, so I've selected a few:

In the recovery room:

The Day After:

Two Days After:

Extraction Saga: Part II - The Morning After The Day Before

Just as I suspected. The T3's worn off and I'm awake. Awake and aware of the throbbing in my mouth. And to make matters worse, I'm hungry. VERY HUNGRY! I suppose this is what happens when you're on a liquid diet.

How's the swelling? Still not as bad as I expected, but it's getting worse. Apparently it swells for up to 48 hrs after the extraction, so I'm guessing i'm not a full blown chipmunk just yet. Probably tonight.

Really, I don't know what's worse. The increasing pain, the fact that moving my mouth however slightly hurts, or this HUNGER!!! If I were living on my own, at the very least, I could pretend that there's no food around. But I'm living at home and there are other people around. Cooking. Making food. EATING!!! And I can smell the aromas wafting and emanating up into my room, stimulating my nose and my salivatory (sp?) glands. And yet. I cannot partake in the glorious act of EATING!

It'll get better. I'll have photos soon I think. Too lazy to link everything up to post photos. I think maybe I'm going to go chum up with my new best friends again. They'll help me thru this. =)~

Extraction Saga: Part I - Wisdom Teeth

I've been dreading December 27th, 2007 for months now. I booked the appointment....in August. And ever since then, I've been counting down the days until I was going under the knife and getting ALL FOUR of my wisdom teeth out. I'm quite certain everyone that knows me that I am rather adverse...scratch that... Extremely adverse to pain. So for months now, I've been wishing that December 27th, 2007 would just DISAPPEAR.

Sadly, it did not. And in the days leading up to this dreaded day, people around me kept telling me their horror stories of their own experiences. People kept telling me how swollen I was going to be. They told me how they don't cut you open and take them out; they told me that they literally rip them from your jaws. It didn't help that when I had to sign a waiver form today says that I've been informed of the risks informed; one of which, was a jaw fracture!!! And it certainly didn't help when friends told me that because I have a paler / fairer complexion, that I was almost CERTAINLY going to turn green. Brilliant.

The day did not begin well. Angel was supposed to drive me to the extraction site, but she set her alarm for PM as opposed to AM. This did not bode well. My father ended driving me and I felt my legs get weaker with every step I took toward the hovering building. Swallowing hard, I entered the office and spoke to the receptionist who very kindly informed me, that of the $1425 procedure, my insurance was covering only $610. Brilliant. I was now paying, out of pocket, $800+ ......to put myself in pain. Absolutely brilliant.

Very quickly, the nurse brought me to the chair. She left me to review the previously stated waiver, and silly me, I decided to peek under the covered trays to see what tools they were going to use on me. If I had any strength left in my arms, I would have smacked my forehead for being so curious. With an unsteady hand, I signed the waiver and tried to relax into the chair. I resigned myself to the fact that this was going to happen whether I liked it or not. I think it helped, because by the time nurse covered me with monitors, my pulse was at a rhythmic 74 and my blood pressure was normal.

They poked me with a small needle in the back of my right hand, and I watched as they emptied the anesthetic into me. I laid back and within seconds, I was passed out. The next thing I knew, they were helping me into the recovery room where there were two other moaning patients with gauze sticking out of their mouths and an ice pack held to their face. The entire procedure took about an hour and a half and I left armed with gauze absorb the leakage from my wounds. Angel picked me up, and took me home, stopping only for my new best friends, Tylenol 3, and some lunch for herself.

I sit here now, hopped up on T3 with gauze in my mouth. I'm not sure if it actually DOESN'T hurt, or if this T3 stuff is actually THAT wonderful. I'm afraid to let the medication wear off. It's not as swollen as I expected (I'll post pics later); my left side barely swollen at all. The right definitely is swollen, and it hurts every time I try to move my mouth to speak / drink / etc. But very definitely, not as bad as I had lead myself to believe. Although of course, I'll likely change my tune tomorrow morning when I wake up with no more T3 in my system. In the meantime, this chipmunk looking patient is just plain HUNGRY..........and not able to eat.

Topic of the Day: Merry Christmas!!!

Just want to wish all of you the very best this Holiday Season. For you Christian sorts, MERRY CHRISTMAS! And Happy Festivus for the rest-of-us! Well, rest of YOU doesn't really work does it =)~

The past week really has been busy. Dad's 60th birthday, another trip to Tremblant, and our annual Christmas get together. I must say, while it was all fun and great, it's rather tiring too. But of course, it also means, lots of pictures!

I have to say. Tremblant was amazing. I really think that everyone should pick up skiing / snowboarding and get up to the top of the mountains. The view is absolutely brilliant and stunning. It might be cos I'm maturing a little bit, starting to realise these things, but I've been up to Tremblant quite a few times now, but only now do I see the beauty. It's absolutely fantastic.

Topic of the Day: Christmas Shopping

Every year, I dread going Christmas shopping because of the throngs of people trying to push and shove their way around trying to get little Johnny or Bobby the latest and greatest toys. Shopping malls inundating us with Christmas songs that make me want to poke out my ear drums so I'll never have to hear another rendition of "Jingle Bells".

But yesterday was glorious!!! I have never enjoyed Christmas shopping as much as I did yesterday. Despite all the sugar coated Holiday songs, yesterday's experience changed the way I view Christmas shopping. You see, Toronto was hit with a fairly major snowstorm. We tracked between 20 - 30cm (8" - 12") of snow with another 20 - 30cm of drift.
The mall was empty. There was maybe a handful of people in there and no one was pushing and shoving and there were actually seats at the food court! On top of that, there were a couple of stores that had a 'snow day' sale!

There should be a major snow storm every year before Christmas.

Flickr

This is a test post from , a fancy photo sharing thing.

Topic of the Day: New Talent!

Went out for dinner last night with family and brought along the new camera for Garbo to see. I won't be taking very many photos this week because Garbo's going to be taking it for her Bahamas trip. So we were having dinner, and Nicholas wanted to play with the camera because we were playing with it.
I must admit, I've never had a knack for photography. I used to cut people's heads off, cut people's ankles off, etc. etc. And even now, I don't know very much about framing and yadda yadda yadda. Most of my photos are random shots catching people off guard. I mean, it's all great fun, but obviously I'm not winning any photography awards.
But Nicholas! We let him play with the camera, and I don't know if it was accidental, or if he's got some hidden talent, but check out the photo he took of his mom!

Topic of the Day: New Camera

The camera we use for work was broken. I mean, you really don't need a reason for a party, but it's nice to have a reason for one. I went to a, "Yay, I'm moving!!!" party. It was great. It was fun. We started off at Monica's place, did some pre-drinking, and then went to a smallish club. Good times. Since I'm too old to go Trick or Treating anymore, it seemed like a good idea to go with Garbo and Nicholas. There was actually a fairly big group of us. Alan stayed home to hand out candy to the kiddies on the block, but Natalie and Michael were there along with Brandi (sp?), Jo and Derek were there with Christopher, Natalie and Michael had both Brian and Eric in tow (or maybe it's Brian and Eric had Natalie and Michael in tow), and Angel came with me accompanying Garbo to see Nicholas getting his Treats. The kids were SUPER cute. It was fun to see all the little rugrats scampering around for candies and chips. And thanks again Garbo for letting Angel and I tag along =)~

Topic of the Day: Lunch!!!

My mom's away for a bit, so I've been eating a lot of junk lately. Got invited to Vince / Sherry's over the weekend to play. I lost a whole $2.00! That's right one great big polar bear. A 'twoonie'. While Texas Hold'em CAN be a fun game, it gets pretty boring pretty quickly when there's only $2.00 at stake. I mean, after 3 hours of playing, Eugene ended up the big winner with a whopping $6.00. He got paid in coins. We've got new neighbours! I haven't met them yet, but from the truck / trailer in their driveway, they appear to be in roofing. Contractors.
While it might be nice to have a contractor as a neighbour, it's gonna suck having that eyesore parked in the driveway all the time now. I never really thought about it before, but it really does disrupt the view.

Topic of the Day: Photo Journal

I bought a Pentax Optio S4 digital camera toward the end of Mar.2004 (see link for details). The little camera has served me really quite well. Upon buying my camera, I started a photo journal. I found out recently that Imagestation will be shutting down for good in 2008. I need to start looking for a new place for my photo log (Plog? Phlog? Maybe I'm starting a new catch phrase. hehe).

I'm a actually a little torn. I haven't been taking as many photos lately. And anything I take, is generally with my phone. With so many people on Facebook, is it even necessary to keep a separate photo journal? I mean, do I really need so many places to tell the whole world about me?

On the other hand, I like Imagestation. These photo sites can do some things that community sites / blogging sites can't. Imagestation tells you how many people have looked at the different albums. You can also have private photos for you to lock in the vault; you share those particular photos with the pertinent people, but the whole world doesn't need to see you doing certain things. I mean, say for example, you decided to go to a Star Trek convention. You probably don't want the whole world to know about it. But you want to share those photos with those who went. Imagestation lets you do that.

And there are so many out there these days. I've got so many accounts all over the place, I don't know which one is which anymore. So many photo sharing sites make you set up an account just to look at people's photos. Kind of pisses me off.
So I'll only be setting up a new site if I find one that does what I want. If anyone has any suggestions on good sites, I'm all ears. Otherwise, I don't think that I'll continue an online photo journal. Which is a bit of a pity, because looking at my imagestation numbers, the photos get looked at, on average, about 100x each.

Topic of the Day: Final Numbers.

I finally keyed in the final numbers for my Subie. I'm wondering if it's time that I moved my page from Xanga over to blogspot. My xanga page talks about topics du jour and rarely about things that are actually happening in my day-to-day life. I've never really liked the thought of blogging personal things. It's too much of a 'Yay-Look-At-Me' sort of a thing. But I suppose it's a way for people to see the inner workings of who I am. So I'm thinking about this blogspot to be posting these things about me. More....intimate information about myself I suppose?
